Most of us are aware the lead could be in paint that was manufactured before 1978. During a whole house lead test, we also found lead in the tile and other materials. A DIY test kit would have been ineffective in testing these materials so we are lucky we had a professional lead tester on standby.
Houses built before 1978 might have lead, some of the building materials and must be tested before disturbing them in a renovation. We conducted a DIY test and found a few areas of concern, so we brought in the professionals to test all of the different areas that would be affected. After conducting 190 samples, we found a few areas that had lead that we did not expect there to be lead and other areas that were free of lead that typically would have had lead in the products.
As a licensed contractor, we inform ALL of our clients that if their house was built before 1978 they MAY have Lead in it. One way to test paint for lead is with a DIY lead paint test kit.
